Tom Waits fans are rejoicing today as the box set Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards was released.  Mr. Waits says of the three disc set that he wanted it “to be like emptying our pockets on the table after an evening of gambling, burglary, and cow tipping.” And that, “gathering all this material together was like rounding up chickens at the beach. It’s not like you go into vault and check out what you need. Most of it was lost or buried under the house. Some of the tapes I had to pay ransom for to a plumber in Russia.” The discs are divided into the up-tempo (Brawlers), smoky nightclub crooning (Bawlers) and the off-kilter (Bastards), and each is 100% pure Tom Waits.

In addition to the Tom Waits, Sufjan Stevens found some time in between his 50 states life-project to release a 5-disc Christmas collection. Songs For Christmas is a 2 hour collection of original Sufjan compositions and re-tooled  Christmas covers. It’s hands-down the hippest Christmas CD released this year.

Another album that caught my ear this week is a compilation in the fine Bossa Nova tradition of Novelle Vague. Bossa N’ Roses is just as it sounds, Bossa Nova versions of Guns N’ Roses songs. And it works brilliantly.

Other notable releases include Brett Dennen, Loreena McKennitt, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Jay-Z, Guy Clark and more. This playlist features one track from 24 albums released today.
