Greatest Country Death Songs

On Thanksgiving I feel it’s important for us to spend time reflecting on all the good things in our lives. My grandmother taught me early that when things are going badly in life, just remember that it’s worse for someone else. If we can spend time being thankful for the good things, we can become happier people.

When we read a book or see a film based on tragedy, one of the beneficial results is the realization of how lucky we actually are. Our day to day trials and tribulations are really nothing, and we should feel ashamed of our pathetic self-pity. Count your blessings, because things could be much worse.

Songcraft is an art that can convey the message just as powerfully as a book or film. And country music is probably second only to death metal when it comes to it’s expertise on the subject of death, with the added benefit of discernable lyrics.

This playlist was limited to 15 of my favorite country songs about death, and was built to help us reflect on how good our lives actually are.

Death by murder, accident and suicide are all represented in this playlist by the likes of Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Steve Earle, Roger Miller, Roy Acuff, Hank Williams and many more.
